Redemption

We went to see the movie Crazy Heart this week. I had heard that it was good. It was.

I won't be a plot spoiler but let me say that it portrayed alcoholism in a way that I am familiar with. In fact, some of this movie churned my stomach in a way that made me say to myself "This is just a movie".

I thought this movie provided a great look at what is lost with alcoholism but what also can be found again through redemption. Isn't that what recovery is about in a way: how we can redeem ourselves through God's grace.

As an aside it was neat to hear the name of a well known AA founder mentioned during the movie. See if you pick up on that.

Have a good Saturday. I am at the state Al-Anon conference this weekend. More on that tomorrow.

  1. Jeff Bridges has a little independent theater near me, and is frequently in town. He gives a lot back to the area in time and money. He is a good guy.

  3. Just catching up on all your answers. What an interesting idea. You're very centered. I wonder what your life was like before, what had you walking through Alanon's doors. If you do another Q&A, I have a few more questions.

  6. Crazy Heart is a movie I'd like to see.

I recently saw The Hangover and I give it a hearty Thumbs Down! I thought the premise was interesting but after that, what a terrible movie with sub-standard acting.

    Have a good weekend.

  11. I have been away and out of the blog loop for a bit so just starting to catch up. I had not heard about this movie until I saw Jeff Bridges win an award for it. Thanks for the review, I will try and catch it if it comes to my town.

  13. redemption is exactly what this is all about, in my opinion. When I got sober, God didn't open the gates of heaven and let me in, He opened the gates of Hell and let me out.

I wish I could take credit for that little gem, but I stole it lol.

  14. I went and saw Crazy Heart this afternoon. It was great. But I thought of you as I had my hands over my eyes... it is only a movie, it is only a movie. But a really good one.

And I was the only one in the theatre who laughed when that guy said his name.

  16. Crazy Heart made me cringe a bit as I knew he wouldn't stop until he hit the absolute bottom. That's the hard part. Watching the self-destruction. But then the redemption came! Something I haven't seen in the alcoholics in my life. As a new person in Al-anon, it was encouraging to see....

  18. Redemption, an interesting concept. I have struggled a the daughter of a "dry" drunk... to be redeemed by her. Then, when I realized I had to do that myself, I thought maybe by sharing my findings, I might help redeem my mom. Alas, redemption is something we do alone with God's great abiding hope. And never for another person.
