Saturday question

It's a glorious Saturday here. I don't feel like thinking about anything heavy today. So I thought that I would ask what is your favorite thing to do on Saturday that has carried over from childhood.

There is still a lot of kid in me so I have to say that I most enjoy being outside. Whether I am on the boat, going for a walk on the beach or in the woods, I enjoy an outside activity of some kind. I used to play in a wood fort that I built from tree limbs. Now I guess the boat is my "fort".

How about you? What is your Saturday memory that you still live today?

  1. Saturday mornings I like to dip toast fingers into a soft-boiled egg. Wholewheat toasted bread and organic free-range eggs with yolks that are vivid orange.

Sometimes I sing The Teddy Bears' Picnic out loud as I dip in my thin toasty fingers.

  2. We're having a day and night of rain here. I'm enjoying this Saturday morning, as so many others since I was a kid, for the morning quiet, with the sound of rain, the Saturday chores, (now complete), looking forward to an afternoon of something fun or maybe a nap, or both. I'm finding this an interesting topic because I've been busy all morning, listening to the rain, feeling snug and secure and remembering some sweet moments from the faraway past. Thanks!

  3. Before we had kids, I took a Saturday call several years ago from somone at the office. We talked back and forth for several minutes and then there was a little pause in the conversation, followed by his asking, "Are you watching the Smurfs?" Haven't seen it in a while, but Papa Smurf really did have some good advice! Enjoy your Saturday!!!

  4. So jealous of your glorious Saturday! It's rainy and gloomy here. On Saturdays I LOVE to be in the sun... Can't wait for sunny summer days!

  5. Saturday mornings would find my childhood family lying on the carpet together in the living room, listening to music and basking in the sunlight like cats. Like Mary LA, one of our favorites (or mine?) was teddy bears' picnic. Peter and the Wolf was another.
Still like to do that now. I haven't thought about that music for a while. Maybe I'll try it out on my kids. Thanks for the idea!

  6. My favorite thing to do as a child on Saturday was to curl up with a good book and nap...it STILL is...but now I really appreciate the nap as much as the book. I am off to dig into Wolf Hall by Hilary Mantel.

  7. I use to love to get up, get a bowl of cereal and watch cartoons till our parents made us start chores. Now I get up and enjoy being in charge of when I have to start the chores!

  8. Depends on where I am - basically my favorite things would be to have a long, leisurely breakfast out and a nice hike with someone who I like and cares about me.

    Blessings and aloha...

  9. Being outside has always been the best place for me. If I can't be out in it, I want to be looking out there. Been like that all my life. So glad for you that it is nice where you live.

  10. My parents wanted to sleep til 9 am or so. So my sister and I would make a bowl of Cheerios and milk, and watch Bugs Bunny. while they slept. I still do that, only now it's Sponge Bob. I love love love Sponge Bob. He's even my ring tone on my cell phone. ( shudder).

  11. I love to read and nap and make a "fort" out of my living room when it's rainy/snowy outside.

When it's sunny then it's walking the dogs on the "boulevard" and enjoying the river and the birds!

I have loved birds forever and so watching them and spotting them is amazing.

  12. I was always an outdoor girl as a kid. I loved Saturdays riding my bike or playing games like hide-and-seek or any one of a number of other games with the neighborhood kids.

Living in Florida it is often too hot for me to enjoy this, but right now the weather is perfect so anything outdoors is good. Today it was walking daughter's dog.

  13. Saturdays were and always will be for playing "Land of the Giants" in the woods. Now I take my dog for a walk in the woods and pretend!

  14. I used to love to go out in the back yard where we had TONS of field stones piled up and a few acres of deciduous and pine trees and just pretend .... I was in wonderland where anything was possible.

  15. I love driving my car on the back roads and taking pictures when it merits it.

  16. I liked yesterday's post about practicing humility through service work with others. That's what recovery is all about: learning to discipline and pray about your own desires for the good of someone else.
As for childhood Saturdays, I don't remember them being special. My mother was into work and there was always work to be done. Today, I'm with Kim: I revel in the fact that I get to decide when and what chores need doing.

  17. Yep, the outdoors is where I remember the best times, and Big & I love the outdoors, we often choose a new state park and adventure out into God's landscape for photography, fresh air and re-connecting with the real world. Thanks for sharing...nothing too 'heavy' today...excellent message I needed today! Be blessed and keep sharing. You rock SYD!

  18. Aaturday was always a doing stuff around the house day, so I think that's my carryover. Also, I am like you, that usually means something outside.

  19. Not so much Saturday (with me it feels like a weekday still), but Sundays are spent with a huge breakfast. The heavy stuff you don't normally eat all week, pancakes, french toast or bisquits, bacon and eggs...

Then it turns into a movie afternoon. I love watching old movies curled up on the couch, blinds closed. It's a sleepy sort of day.

In the summer, it's the day for mountain driving. (Hugs)Indigo

  20. I'm with Indigo on this a little too. Sundays were the day I liked and still do. We'd have a late breakfast, and go to church, and then visit grandma. When I got older it became a late breakfast and a generally lazy day. That's what I like on Sundays. Get the errands done on Saturday, and then read the paper on Sunday morning with a cup of coffee while my daughter plays quietly or watches tv. Doesn't happen often, but it's nice.
