May day

I am letting sleeping dogs lie today. It's blustery out, and we are all tired after staying up with friends until two AM talking and discussing all manner of things from the tragedy of the oil spill

to the political extremism in the country. The cross talk increased as more wine was drunk. I didn't feel like drinking so C and I were content with our club sodas.

It's interesting to hear people go from making sense to spewing out a lot of unconnected thoughts when in their cups. Detachment feels as if I am inspecting a strange species of insect and seeing its many parts. I can say "Look at that bug. How interesting that it has a brilliant shell and some social behavior, but it has no capacity to think. It just has a bunch of ganglia that determine actions." I can observe but not pick it up.

We are now at anchorage. The old dog is sleeping on her pillows. We had breakfast for lunch and will take a nap listening to the wind and waves. Later, there will be time for a walk on the beach to hunt for shark's teeth.

I suppose the raucous celebration of the pagan Mayday occurred last night. Let's hope the nautical Mayday isn't needed.

  1. You're a hoot, Syd, love the bug analogy.

  2. When I stopped drinking I was a bartender in a very busy place (and played violin, ya know--grin!)

To this day I believe with no doubt that one of the factors contributing to my staying sober ..was listening to the bar-Peeps saying the same, same, exact same words over and over and over.

I realized that is ME--I did not wish to be a mush-like-minded Peep. Still working on the "mush-mindedness". Thanks, SYD

  5. That doggie could only be cuter if she were... a cairn terrier, of course!!

(not that I have scruffbag terriers on the brains or anything...)

  6. I always love your descriptions of happenings on your boat. Your dog looks so happy. I know the two of you are happy too - looking for sharks teeth and all.

  7. I don't like bugs enough to interact with them for hours!

Have a nice weekend. Hope that oil doesn't get to you.

  8. It is interesting to be participating in great discussions with other people and also to see the changes that occur as more alcohol is drunk. It is more interesting when you are not drinking at all. Glad you had a good time though and are having a calm day today.

  9. You make me laugh, mayday indeed. I think the best day is filled with naps after a late rising, true luxury.

  13. I love the observation of looking at bugs. I look forward to the next time I am with a group of people falling into their cups to have a scientific look at them.

  15. My son gets loud and obnoxious when he is drunk. I do not like to be around anyone who is like that. Gotta love boundaries. I'm like your dog..would rather chill out on a big comfy pillow!

  16. Many times since getting sober I've sat with my sober hubby observing the deterioration of thought that comes with drinking quantities. I smile because I used to be so smart and funny when I was under the influence. To think it was all an illusion is humbling. Happy May Day.

  17. Since being in Al-anon, I've had difficulty hanging around people who drink a lot.

Alcoholism has had such an effect upon my life, I choose to stay away from the party life.

I do enjoy staying up late with friends and talking though.

  18. Just found this blog and not sure how it all works. I saw and title and the dog and kept reading. I miss my big labrador and my boat that we had. The dis-ease of Alcoholism took the boat and God took my dog, Tonka 2yrs ago. I miss them both. I will have memories and living o.d.a.t will make new memories. 12-steps give me the courage to have dreams...which I have been pushed down for a very long time. Thanks.-J
