Tired today

I am having too much fun in retirement.  Today I was totally beat after fishing for much of the afternoon and then going to the Sail and Power Squadron dinner last night.  It was an interesting and cordial bunch of folks.  In fact, it was probably the friendliest group of people that I have been around in a long time. They were so interested in my boats and my career.  The food at the dinner was great--Lowcountry Boil (aka Frogmore Stew) with local shrimp, Italian sausages, corn, and potatoes all cooked in a spicy mix.  Delicious!

Of course,  I had to get sworn in (actually raising my right hand) and pledge allegiance to the flag. I had not done that since grade school.  I also couldn't help noticing that all the commanders of the group were men.  And that they didn't recycle.  The latter is something that I think bears a suggestion to change. I decided to join this group because they offer some great courses.  On Monday, I start taking Piloting and later in the month I will take a course on Engine Maintenance.  I will miss my home group meeting on Monday night but do need the courses with the new boat.

After getting home from the dinner last night,  I stayed up until 1 AM reading the paper.   That is probably a bad idea because I have to remind myself that I am powerless over people who think that their way is the only way (=Florida minister who thinks burning the Qu'ran is a good idea).  I just hope that good sense will prevail.  I may just be futilely optimistic.

Now it's time for some dinner. And then I'm turning in for the night.  Too tired to do much else now!

  4. When it's time...it is time--and that includes BED time.

Like fishy stories, Syd. Did the Power Squadron thing long enough ago to have forgotten what I learned...still have the books. You will LOVE it (the courses).

  5. sounds great. the ppl at the dinner who were interested in yr boat and career sounded sweet.

I think a lot of the time people are drawn to the ? charismatic quality recovery gives people. It is an attractive aura of being comfortable in ones own skin. They do not articulate it as such, but can be very drawn to the 'recovery person' in social situations. Especially if you have developed a capacity for 'constant thought of others'. People just love that :)
Glad you are enjoying yr retirement :)

  6. We're all powerless around lunatics. I suspect you might be too much of a free spirit and radical thinker for your squadron commanders. Enjoy!

  7. Too much fun in retirement? Totally beat from being so busy? I can relate. Now you know the truth for those of us who are positive minded and read the JUST FOR TODAY flyer.

    Food looks fabulous.

I know you are enjoying every moment of your new way of living and that boat too. :)

  8. I'm loving your retirement, it sounds fantastic so far! as for the recycling, I cringe every time I'm at my in-laws and they throw bottles and cans in the trash.

  10. My grandfather belonged to the Power Squadron! I never could figure out what it was.
I've avoided talking about that minister because- why give him any more attention than he has already over-gotten?
What a strange world we live in, so much beauty, so much goodness, so much ignorance and fear.
    We go on.

  11. That's a long day. But what a great one. The new group sounds like just the perfect place for you to learn what you need to and maybe some fellowship too. The food in the picture is so appetizing, I will have to try to make that.

  12. I'm so happy for you Syd. Sometimes I have to miss my home group too and while I really don't like too, I remind myself that its not "law" that I attend every single week. No guilt if I have to miss. Even if I just need a night to be at home....its ok. Its my opportunity to attend....but I have choices now.

  14. Syd, gotta say, quite often your blog makes me want to change my ways and cook more often. All those garden photos... One way I've really let my family and myself down--not planning good meals and not taking the time to cook them. I don't enjoy cooking much, and when I get single-minded about work or anything in life I don't really care about food. But your photo of the stew reminded me that I need to look for balance (and I don't even care for shrimp! but my husband would). thanks. --G
