Dog Trauma

This beautiful fellow above is Mr. Moose.  He has had a badly swollen leg for a couple of days so tonight we took him to the veterinarian.  It appears that he has an infection in his front leg.  The vet wasn't sure what caused the infection, but with antibiotics, a shot for pain, and some prednisone, we hope that he will be up and running about soon.

At first we thought that he had been bitten by a snake as there are plenty of the pesky copperheads on the property.  But we didn't see any obvious fang marks.  One never knows what the dogs run into when they are playing in the paddocks.  There is snake fencing up (small wire to keep the slithery critters out) but some times one will get in with the dogs.  Fortunately, their recuperative powers are incredible.  Wild dogs had to recover quickly as an adaptation to not being left behind but to continue with the pack.  Domestic dogs seem to have the same remarkable traits.

I am hoping that our dear Mr. Moose will be better tomorrow.  It is disconcerting to see a greyhound with one leg twice the size of the other.  He is generally very active so when he isn't wagging and happy, we know that he doesn't feel well.  What great creatures these animals are.  They are dependent on us but yet seem so stoic with their pain.  We could all take lessons from these wonderful animals.

  3. Poor puppy. The best thing is when they are feeling better and back to their tail-wagging, happy selves. I hope he's up and about soon.

  4. I am sending lots of loving energy to Mr. Moose. We have 3 cats, one of whom we sometimes Mr. Moose (this has morphed from Sammy to Samoose to Mr. Moose). The bonds we have with our animal companions are deep, and when they are ill, it's difficult not to feel helpless. Please let us know how he's doing.

  6. I'm betting that modern medicine will pull through, he looks like a love. We have a lot of greyhounds up here courtesy of rescues for ex-racers. He'll be back on 4 feet before we know it, I hope and pray.

  8. I'm sorry hear that Mr. Moose is feeling unwell and hope his leg heals soon. I know what you mean about having animals, I have Missy, my cat and she is just awesome, I love her so much. I can't imagine my life without her now. We've had her for six weeks now and he is just the most cutest little kitty. Anyway, hope your dog gets better really fast.

  12. I hope your pup feels better soon. It's so hard to know they're in pain.
I spent the night at the vet's with my rabbit. I consider him my dog. He is extremely smart. affectionate and lays beside me watching tv. He is very very ill and the next 12 hours are crucial. I hope everything heals smoothly and quickly for Mr.Moose.

  17. OOH, poor Mr. Moose. Watch out for Prednisone psychosis. If he acts weird, call your vet! Don't know if doggies get it, but I did when I had to take that pesky drug.

  18. we had a German Shepard that we nicknamed 'Moose' due to her lumbering, large nature.

More prayers being sent his way. I can't stand to see animals in pain.

  20. Glad you're still writing. I found your blog just when I needed a mentor most, and you have been my anchor in a year of stormy sea. Your writing has helped me more than I can say. Thanks for it.

  21. If the prednisone has the same effect on dogs as it does on me, he's 10 feet tall and bulletproof about now...hope he recovers soon.
