Marooned

There is ice covering everything here.  The bridges have been closed for now, so we are marooned on the island.  That's just fine with me.  We have a good fire going in the fire place just in case the power goes out.  That is highly likely because there are so many trees all around, and the power lines are above ground so susceptible to falling tree limbs.

I am going to spend the day reading and maybe cooking something good for dinner.  There is a chili cook off on Thursday at the Sail and Power Squadron, so I have got to get all the ingredients together.  If anyone has some outstanding chili recipes that they would like to share, please send them to me.  I am not going to put beans in the chili but will keep it as a true meat based chili.  We will cook some corn bread to go with it.  I like the kind that has whole kernel corn in the recipe.

I sound like an intense chef from the food network this morning.  That's what an ice storm does--makes one think of food, warm fires, and enjoying being home.  Tonight is my home group meeting.  I am not sure whether I will make the 40 minute drive to get there.  That meeting, as I have written before, is held on another island and way out in the country.  It is a wonderful drive but probably not the best thing to do if freezing conditions continue.

I am planning on having a moment of silence and meditation this morning at 11 AM.  It will be my morning meditation.  A moment to just sit in silence and offer prayers for being here, being present, being in recovery and being filled with gratitude.

  1. I will email you a GREAT chili recipe. It includes a can of Budweiser, so you can choose how to handle that. LOL

  2. I'm with you on the 11am moment of silence/meditation.

To me a great chili has plenty of chili powder and cumin. After that, anything goes....

Enjoy your day of being marooned.

  3. I make chili with lots of beans so...
Although, I have made a sort of chili colorado, a bastardized version with enchilada sauce. It's delicious.
I think you should stay home and be safe today. Turn inward and be glad.
    Be warm, Syd.

  4. I always add a little unsweetened chocolate and a heaping tablespoon of pureed chipotle peppers in adobe sauce. I buy the whole chipotle peppers in adobe sauce in a tin and then puree the lot and keep in it the fridge in a covered dish to add to all kinds of things.

    Cornbread is awesome!

  5. Glad to be in awareness today of your meditation practice, Syd. I did my breathing practice during the eleventh hour. I like thinking that maybe we overlapped.

In our neck of the woods we have three inches of snow. I am not sure I will get out into it, because I dropped a cast-iron griddle on my toe and it is limiting my ability to wear shoes of any kind. Somehow I don't picture myself walking barefoot in the snow. It is no longer the time for Good Kind Winceslas!

And hanks for reminding me of your British friend and his exploration of meditation. I shall investigate that more as January passes.

  7. The icing on the trees is really quite spectacular!

I got stuck in the north area until the bridges re-opened. Got to work VERY early this morning and they finally called it a day and closed.

  8. Wow, Syd, you really got hit. We, (just 4 hours North/West of you) have snow but it's barely an inch and no ice that I can see.
Enjoy the moments of solitude...I love them too.

  9. You actually make me wish for ice so I can be at home instead of in my office buried in work. Enjoy your solitude that nature has provided as well as your meditation......

  11. My hot tip for anything, chili, spaghetti, taco related is to allow the raw meat to cook down with the ingedients at the same time. Not to brown the meat first. Obviously, more fat that way. But, hey, what's a little fat, right?

  13. Your nice photo gives me an idea of what is happening on the island.
I enjoy staying home near a fire when it's cold outside with a good read.

  16. My chili recipe is no better than any other - although I've never tried making chili without beans (or Music Fruit, as they are called in our household) I'm sure an all-meat chili must taste fairly similar. Just not as bulky.

And yes - don't go out traveling if it's not REALLY necessary. No point in taking chances.
