I haven't had any time to post today. This morning was a department meeting where we discussed another budget shortfall. I'm grateful that all my projects are fiscally sound and my staff are will be maintained.

This afternoon I drove to the upstate to attend a rehearsal dinner for a couple getting married tomorrow. I tried to remember all the excitement and nervousness that I felt the day before our wedding. We didn't have a fancy wedding. I guess it cost all of $300. We were married at my parents house so my 90 year old grandmother could attend. And the biscuit timer went off during the ceremony. A neighbor baked the wedding cake. My father gave us money for a down payment on a house as a present.

I don't think either one of us regretted not having a big wedding. And we have outlasted many who spent thousands on one. I wish this couple a long and happy life together. And hopefully they will have patience and understanding to carry them through the rough spots.

  1. I really enjoyed the personal touches you shared in this post, Syd. Last night I went to my first meeting and I wrote about it (sort of) on my site. You might be interested in it!

  2. So much money wasted on huge weddings. You were very wise to keep it simple. Have a great time at the wedding!

  4. The hubs and I were married by a justice of the peace at the court house with two witnesses. Cost, under $50.00. He is my longest relationship. Guess it worked out. Thanks for sharing syd.

  5. When Mr. Steve and I got married, a coworker made our wedding cake, another coworker offered her home for the reception, and a wonderful AA girlfriend made my wedding dress. As I write this I realize how very blessed I am.

    God bless you Syd.

  6. I second that emotion: that they have enough patience and understanding to weather the rough spots ahead.

  9. it's just not about the stuff! and look how you all have endured, without all the "trappings" of a big wedding. that's quite a testament to love and what's really important!

  10. I got married at my mother in law's house, a friend made the cake, and I wore a prom dress (it looked pretty much like a wedding dress) that had been marked down 80%. Here we are at 31 years together.

I could not agree more, Syd...money don't buy love.

  12. Budget cuts are pretty grim around here at present. Hope you had a great time at the wedding. Ours was at the embassy overseas, not expensive at all and lasted almost three decades, so far.

The timer going off was cute.

  13. on a ! completely different topic, heres a petition i think is worthy of signing, but if you don't think the same, then thats absolutely fine with me :)

here's a thing i found that you may like.
ignore it if you want, that's fine, :) but i just thought id mention it just in case..

Its an anti-discrimination petition for Buddhist nuns..if you feel so inclined :) If not, that's ok too.

Being a girlee I hate to see any kind of unfairness toward women if they are just as capable as men, and some recent shenanigans in an Australian monastery where a 'rebel monk' went against the wishes of his superiors and fully ordained 3 nuns, and was swiftly 'excommunicated', have brought this matter to a head, thereby creating a !! perfect opportunity to confront the elephant in the room regarding 'proper' female ordination. :)
So this long overdue issue has the potential to be addressed properly, as those 'superiors' are going to have to issue a statement and explanation as to the events that led up to the excommunication.
Its an interesting chapter, and there is potential for the discriminatory exclusion of women in this tradition to be overturned, once and for all. But who knows eh. Only time will tell. No harm trying in the meantime.. :)

  14. I always thought large wedding lost the reason and meaning behind getting married. Small seems more heartfelt and honorable. (Hugs)Indigo
