Express from God

"Spring is the Period Express from God." Emily Dickinson

I am grateful today for the things that I have. I am imagining on this day when the pear trees and daffodils are blooming that I want all the things that I already have. What would it be like to not want another thing?

I can tell you that I have learned that few of the things that I buy have brought me serenity. The exception has been the boat. It too has been a serenity breaker at times though. Painting the hull, getting it wired for lights, taking down the mast, having multiple cluster f**ks with the rigging--these have sorely tried me. But the boat is like the "fort" I wrote about yesterday. I can think of few other "things" that make me that happy.

I think that I basically have all the things that I want. I am blessed with love, good health, a home, friends both furry and human, and a concious contact with God. All of those are more than enough today.

  1. Isn't it a wonderful feeling to have all that you could want. All the other stuff is just fluff.

  2. Love the quote from Emily. She knew about the power of nature's beauty and true simplicity. Your boat teaches you that as well, it asks you to "walk the talk" of simplicity. I find true simplicity always asks me to show up and serve in some way. I compost, and that is work too. I love simple food, but that requires care in choices, use of tools that need my care, and care and attention as I prepare it...

  3. Me too, Syd. We are in the same place today only I am still waiting for the bradford pears to bloom. They are my favorite tree and when they bloom, winter is truly gone...until November!

  4. I think you're right about boats and serenity. The key is it just needs to be someone else's boat!

  5. Period Express? It might be the cold medicine but I don't get it.

  6. Happiness is not having what you want, but wanting what you have. -- I believe Honest Abe said that.

  8. I'm so sorry that you're feeling ill. I'm wondering if it could be all the pollen. I know this time of year I'd feel sick 24/7 without the wonderful allergy medicines that are available nowadays. I favor the genetic claritin because I cannot afford the real stuff. It sure helps with the itchy eyes, ears, and nose. Some people prefer to believe that they're sick every fall and spring though.
Anyway I'm sorry to ramble. Please take care of yourself! You're one of my absolute favorite blogs!

  9. Yep, sounds as if you have all you need, and want--maybe a little extra, i.e., preparing and painting the hull--and other places.

Yours is the only blog I feel silly writing "PEACE" at the end, because you already have THAT, also, maybe!

    Anyway, PEACE!

  10. When all is said and done I think I would have to say that I have everything I could ever want. I have love, hope, joy, peace, serenity, purpose. It doesn't get much better than that, does it Syd?

  11. Daffodils are amazing flowers.

You're a blessed man to be serene and content with what you have. Its sad to watch people accumulate things in hopes to fill that empty hole inside their heart.

  12. I really enjoy reading your blog.
My travels in life were a great tool for learning about myself through looking at others lives. I live a life of luxury compared to other women throughout the world.
Gratitude today is having choices in my life.

  13. My boat is a hole in the water I dump money into! :) It looks like spring is on it's way for ya'all. Have a great week. I'm catching up on you as my blog reading has fallen behind.

  14. It's a miracle that we want what we have today. To be content with what God has given us is a gift. Funny, I want what I have and I'm grateful that I want what I have! Enjoy the blooms...

  16. Having just learned a good friend in alanon/aa is fighting with a brain tumor I realize just how precious life and the ability to serve is today. And just how much a knot in the rigging can teach about taking the time to work out the knots in the rigging so that we have a clear shot at catching the wind that moves us on.

Isn't it amazing how much one bit of news about a change in someone elses circumstance can change our perspective?
