Friday thoughts

Lots to do today.  We are going to the art walk tonight which happens on the first Friday of every month. Lots of local talent in various galleries.  Gas lit street lamps and cobblestones.

The heat wave continues.  Yesterday, the heat index was 122 F.  There was a breeze, but it was packed with heat and humidity.  Maybe the tropical storm will send some rain and cloud cover this way.

The meeting topic yesterday was on having a spiritual awakening.  Mine came gradually--no lightening bolt moments.  I do believe Step 12--"Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps....."  As a result of the steps, not as a result of going to meetings, reading books but actually doing the work with a sponsor who has a sponsor.  Now I know that the "Ah-hah" moments are not coincidence but my HP working.

Trying to figure out what to do during the day this weekend to beat the heat while staying on an un-airconditioned boat at the marina for the night.  Maybe Barnes and Noble or the public library to sit and read, or a movie.  I am sure that something will come up that will be a solution.

Working on information on horseshoe crab to share in an article.  Fascinating critters that have been around for millions of years.  And we humans could not do without their blood from which is extracted cells that are used to test for bacterial contamination in medical devices and injectable drugs. Horseshoe crab blood coagulates in the presence of minute quantities of gram-negative bacterial endotoxins. Known as the LAL test, it is currently the worldwide standard for screening medical equipment for bacterial contamination.  No other known procedure has the same accuracy as the LAL test.  I hope that they remain with us in spite of our using their blood and messing with their habitat.

Have a good Friday.  I am off to start my day.

  1. Jack and Ann Rudloe have studied the magnificent horseshoe crab for years. And I have observed them on beaches my entire life. Somehow, their very presence is comforting.
    Happy Friday, Syd.

  6. The horseshoe crabs look like they're making crop circles in sand! I learned something today.

Sure sounds hot where you are...hate to tell you it's cool where I am but I'm in Colorado. I'm wearing a sweater. (sorry, really!) I used to live in Texas (it's where my daughter was born and died) and the heat is brutal there. I don't miss it a bit.

Living on a boat sounds very unusual. My grandfather always wanted to live on a houseboat but grandma said no. He was in the Merchant Marines and found living on land a bit odd. =)

  7. Great Friday to you too Syd. Much going on in your world, and sadly it's hot where we are too, can't escape the heat, but I have found that art walks help!

  9. Cool pic of the crabs and I did not know the thing about coagulating blood in the presence of gram negs. Fascinating. I'm still moving through my spiritual awakening, too.

  10. I thought the same thing as Brian. Those crabs are trying to tell us something with their writing. It almost looks like a peace symbol and wouldn't that be great.

  12. I love that I almost always learn something when I visit you Syd! The art walk sounds AWESOME! We didn't see horseshoe crabs in the OBX, but it wasn't for lack of looking lol

my spiritual growth has come gradually, often in clumps, fits and starts... dry patches in there as well...

  13. They are totally cool, but I don't like finding that the ground is suddenly moving underneath my feet in the ocean and that my stepdaughter is NOT interested in saving me from these pre-historic creatures of the deep :)

It was a funny day though, and I do really love the horseshoe crab

  14. I spent my Friday evening in an art gallery too, a reception for a friend's new show. There were lots of marsh and ocean paintings, because we live on the California coast. There was plenty of wine, too, since we live in a wine region. I once believed I couldn't participate in events like that without the buzz of alcohol. I couldn't even talk to people without a buzz to break down my inhibitions. But the 12 steps have broken down the barriers between me and other people. By helping heal my chronic self-centeredness, the program gave me an interest in my fellows, and in fellow creatures like the horseshoe crab, and now it's a kick to ask questions, to learn about their lives. Hope you find some cool relief this weekend.

  15. There was a great show on PBS last year about the horseshoe crabs and the birds that follow them and live on their eggs. The day I saw it the beach was covered with mating horseshoe crabs.

  16. What incredible heat.. and what great information you have to draw on for your reflections. I will share the horseshoe crab story with my son. Beautiful how we need one another, all species, all life...
