It was a great long weekend. I spent most of the time on the boat and sailing. We stayed at the anchorage on Sunday night. There were big swells coming in on the incoming tide. It made for an uncomfortable couple of hours. After that, all was calm and we were able to get some sleep.There were the usual party boats with some pretty heavy drinking. Quite a few people were funneling. I guess this is a quick way to binge drink. I'm not sure why one would want to drink like this.
I helped push a few boats off the beach so that they could get underway. One was driven by an older gentleman. He said that he was the "taxi" for a group of young people who had been partying very hard. The sheriff's patrol actually came ashore and checked on one of the fellows who was passed out. He managed to rally though after one of his friends put popcorn on his back. That drew a flock of seagulls who proceeded to pick the popcorn off him. I guess he had enough of that, staggered to his feet, fell down, and then made it haltingly to the boat. My guess is that the older fellow driving the boat was a father to one of the girls on board. He seemed to take it all in stride. I wonder at the choices that parents have to make today about their kids and drinking. And I wonder who was going to make sure none of these kids got behind the wheel of a car. These are interesting times in many ways.
After I checked the news and weather, I was relieved to see that the levees held. Parts of New Orleans were a mess though. And now it appears that Hurricane Hannah is heading this way. I'm probably going to get the sailboat out of the water tomorrow.
There is a high probability that the hurricane will hit near where we live. At least, that's what the models seem to be forecasting. There is already a frenzy at work today. Getting things prepared by Friday at home and work means I'd better get going. Hope to check in later.
I am so thankful to not be a part of that day-after-the-holiday hangover set. I can only feel sympathy for those that were suffering today. There but for the grace of God and AA go I.
ReplyDeleteWe're supposed to be getting Hannah on Saturday. scowl at me if you wish but I love me a good hurricane! Though, by the time Hannah gets here, it wont be very much of a storm. Either way, be careful.

ReplyDeleteThere will obviously be no drinking in our house as our boys grow up, but I don't want to act like it doesn't exist. When they get a little older, maybe 11 or 12, we will make sure they understand the ramifications of drinking with the genes they've inherited. They already understand that mom was "sick" and attends meetings.
ReplyDeleteI hope you don't have too many problems from old Hanna in the coming days. I will be thinking about you two down south. Maybe we will both get lucky and it will either miss both of us or not be too intense if it does hit.

And it does not even look attractive, those kids binge drinking. My husband's sister lives in North Carolina and it is possible she will be affective by the storm also. Stay safe.
ReplyDeleteHope u r ok syd, yes drinking and partying then the morning after, it doesnt even cross my mind anymore drinking alcohol, in fact the only time I think about it is at the AA when Im hearing peoples stories.

ReplyDeleteI really like what Ralph said. Where I live there are no hurricanes, tornadoes, earthquakes. Just snakes and lizards. Oh yeah, and a little monsoon now and then. Stay dry. I hope you are well and all are safe.
