What I have been doing

I have been harvesting vegetables from the garden.  Yesterday,  I watered all the flowers and spent time picking produce.  Last night, I fried some potatoes, made potato soup, cooked some green beans, and had a cucumber, tomato, basil and mozzarella salad (insalata caprese).  It was pretty awesome.

I am missing my partner who is enjoying the cool weather up north.  She said that it was delightful with temperatures in the 60's.  She missed her early morning flight on Saturday, thinking that it was at 6:30 AM instead of 5:30 AM.  I didn't say a word about that as I drove as fast as I could to get her to the airport.  It seems that the airlines were nice enough to reschedule her which enabled her to get a direct flight from DC to Nantucket. She got in earlier than she would have on the other flight!  When she called me, she said that God watches out for stupid people and drunks.  I have always loved C's sense of humor!

I'm off this morning to head to the beach for a memorial service for K.  There will be lots of dogs there as one of her connections was with those who walked dogs at the beach.  I am feeling at peace about this now.

After that, I'll head back to the farm for more watering and garden browsing.  Life is busy but in a good way.  Happy Sunday to all of you.

  1. It's cool and gray -- with many periods of rain -- here in the North East but I guess I'd have to be coming from a hot and sunny place to call it delightful.

Wishing you a serene and peaceful day.

  2. Happy Sunday to you as well.

    I enjoy reading your blog.

I grew up on a farm and appreciate all the hard work that goes into running one.

  3. Yummy! I just started to grow my very first banana pepper plant. My mom grows basil and I love tomato, mozz, basil salads. We also make Pesto with her fresh basil. Thanks for sharing, and I'll be thinking of you and the memorial service today. I love that it will be at the beach with dogs :)

  6. C was indeed blessed to miss one flight and arrive earlier on the next flight. Your red potatoes and cucumbers that I can see in the buckets look yummy. I fix fried potatoes often and add fresh herbs. I wish you peace at the memorial service.

  7. Good morning, Syd! It's your old friend, Tracey. Just stopping by to see how you're doing. S is coming by this morning to take a shower. Still in and out of shelters. Five years of this now. Maybe some day...Grateful that he is not at his worst though, drug-wise. It's the little things. ~Hugs~T

  12. Have you ever grown your own peas?
I'll never forget the sight of my grandmother shelling her own peas in the kitchen, for Sunday lunch... something you'd never see howadays!

Homegrown veg is supposed to be far better than farm... but why? What are farms doing wrong that gardeners do right? Has it something to do with picking things in advance, then letting them ripen in transit, when they're in the dark and disconnected from the stem that would feed extra nutrition into them?

I have no idea; have you?

  13. PS I've never been to America so this isn't my view, just something I've heard a few times ~ that American food, specifically the veg ~ looks wonderful. But they say it's even more tasteless than ours. I dunno why. Perhaps it has to do with selecting crops for appearance rather than flavour..?

There are exceptions: I bought cherries last week that were the biggest I've ever seen, size of cherry tomatoes and some of the best ever too

  17. Look at all those potatoes! Is this when you harvest them? I have some growing in my compost heap, and I never know when to pull them up.
God bless your period of solitude. May C have a wonderful vacation in Nantucket. May absence work its magic.
